RACHMANINOV APARTMENT

2021 Bucharest Architecture Annual Nomination

This project embodies a downshifting narrative, translating the residents’ desire for a simplified urban life after residing in an award-winning suburban home. Their sole initial request was the inclusion of a painting by Gili Mocanu – a key element that informed the design process.

Inspired by the idyllic Verdi Park adjacent to the apartment, the interior unfolds as a neutral backdrop, embracing the artwork and purging superfluous elements.

This essentialization reflects the residents’ commitment to prioritizing a stripped-down lifestyle. Material selections were meticulously chosen to complement the artwork’s chromatics.

We prioritized natural, breathable materials such as mineral-based finishes, solid wood elements, and untreated surfaces, aiming to enhance well-being through a connection with nature.

The boundaries between interior and exterior dissolve, thanks to the expansive loggia that frames the park as a living tableau. This interplay between seasons, captured in the artwork, breathes life into the modest space, creating a sense of depth and expansiveness.

The boundaries between interior and exterior dissolve, thanks to the expansive loggia that frames the park as a living tableau.

This interplay between seasons, captured in the artwork, breathes life into the modest space, creating a sense of depth and expansiveness. The silent dialogue between the park’s rustling foliage, the painting’s narrative, and the residents’ everyday activities paints a poignant and intimate scene.

Through essentialization and a profound connection to nature, the Rachmaninov 38 apartment becomes a haven of simplicity, fostering a meaningful and peaceful existence for its inhabitants.
