ADĂPOST: An Exhibition on Uninhabited Architecture and Cultural Landscapes

ADĂPOST is a research and exhibition project initiated by CUMULUS Architecture, exploring uninhabited architecture and the relationship between people, nature, and the imprint of building within Romania’s cultural landscapes.

Amzei Creative Corner, Piața Amzei 13, Bucharest
 13–28 March 2025
 Mon–Fri: 16:00–20:00 | Sat–Sun: 11:00–20:00
 Opening: 13 March, 18:30

Situated at the threshold between village and wilderness, traditional annexes—hay barns, stables, shepherds’ huts, and fishermen’s shelters—stand as quiet witnesses to an authentic way of building, deeply adapted to place and available resources. The project brings these secondary structures to the forefront, proposing them as relevant references for contemporary discussions on sustainability, restraint, and contextual design.

The exhibition brings together photographs, drawings, testimonies, and artefacts resulting from field explorations carried out in five regions across Romania, highlighting essential lessons related to attention to place, the use of natural materials, and balance in construction.

In contrast to the seriality and uniformity of much contemporary architecture, ADĂPOST advocates for restraint as a design approach and for respectful, measured interventions in cultural landscapes.

The project is initiated by CUMULUS Architecture and made possible with the support of the Ordinul Arhitecților din România din timbrul de arhitectură.

NEW HERITAGE - 3rd place winner for the 2025 Biennale di Venezia Competition

We are excited to announce the groundbreaking of our ambitious project for the renewal of an existing building within Făgăraș protected area. The proposal seeks to honor the architectural heritage of the site while transforming it into a refined three-star hotel. What if architecture could do more than create spaces—what if it could forge connections? Our proposal celebrates Romania’s unique cultural landscapes, where nature and tradition coexist in harmony. This vision reclaims sustainable construction and community-driven practices, reshaping architecture as a mediator between humanity and the natural world. Construction thus becomes a communal act, bringing people together whilst architecture isn’t just built—it’s lived, shared, and sustained.
