Hotel Făgăraș explores the limitations and possibilities of an existing building built in 1953-1954. Appeared as a result of the need for housing units for the technical staff of the Nitramonia complex in Făgăraș, the building is part of a small ensemble made according to typical projects specific to the period, significant for its unitary quality.

The conversion from residence to hotel involved subtle overall alterations, predominantly consisting of the release of the existing framework and its transformation from loft to attic, thus making the space suitable for temporary living.

The added dormers in the attic replicate the gaps in the lower registers, remaining within the parameters of typical Stalinist academicism.

The access to the hotel below the level of the natural terrain creates the opportunity of a distance from the street and the living area, subtly separating the two worlds, that of the neighborhood and permanent housing, from that of the hotel and temporary housing.

The project aims to render the city building in its most convenient form, leaving the context unchanged through its transformation.

NEW HERITAGE - 3rd place winner for the 2025 Biennale di Venezia Competition

We are excited to announce the groundbreaking of our ambitious project for the renewal of an existing building within Făgăraș protected area. The proposal seeks to honor the architectural heritage of the site while transforming it into a refined three-star hotel. What if architecture could do more than create spaces—what if it could forge connections? Our proposal celebrates Romania’s unique cultural landscapes, where nature and tradition coexist in harmony. This vision reclaims sustainable construction and community-driven practices, reshaping architecture as a mediator between humanity and the natural world. Construction thus becomes a communal act, bringing people together whilst architecture isn’t just built—it’s lived, shared, and sustained.
